About Us
Our Mission.
Desco is a professional Latinx social change theater organization that centers Latinx, immigrant, and LGBTQ+ identities and their intersections. Through theater, arts, and educational programming, we promote the diverse experiences, cultures, and talents of Latinx communities while prioritizing accessibility. As an advocacy and activist organization, we embrace decolonization as an ongoing process to challenge systemic oppression and uplift marginalized voices while building community around healing and joy

Decolonization
We understand "decolonization" as a process, as well as an effort, to retell and reframe the narratives that have been told about ourselves, our bodies, our experiences, our history, and our knowledge. We also understand "decolonization" as a call to recognize and return to our roots, a desire to connect with the love and wisdom of our ancestors.
Accessibility
We are committed to reducing barriers that hinder access to community/cultural experiences through:

Language Accessibility:
We provide programming in Spanish, Spanglish, and Indigenous languages, and provide translation for first generation Latinx individuals who identify with the Latin American culture but do not speak Spanish.

Financial Accessibility:
We offer free programming and a sliding scale: people choose the price that best adjusts to their economic situation.

Geographic Accessibility:
We offer geographic accessibility by taking programming to rural areas like Apopka, partnering with farmworker organizations. We take theater to the people who would not access artistic programming otherwise.
Disability Accessibility:
We provide sign language in almost all of our programs and audio description in both English and Spanish whenever possible. In addition, all our programs are held in fully accessible venues. (In partnership with Dicapta.)

Our Team.
Desco’s Board, administrators, creative team, and artists, are from the communities we serve.
We are activists, educators, facilitators, and theater practitioners with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and expertises. We share a commitment to creating social change and promoting social justice through the arts.
We redistribute resources and opportunities for diverse underserved Latinx artists; and we use the arts to build bridges and empower voices in our community in the pursuit of intersectional justice.
